22 Nov mind chatter
You’ve mustered up the courage to try something new, speak up in a meeting, or simply initiate conversation with that person you may have found to be interesting, but then, small thoughts began holding you back.
Many refer to these thoughts as mind chatter or “chattering monkeys”.
These thoughts can often get into the way of your professional or personal goals.
Mind chatter can also cause you to become easily distracted. With self-control, mind chatter can be shut down. I like to refer to it as “taming the monkey.”
The first step in taming mind chatter is to become grounded and calm the mind—that is, remember to be in the here and now. Being present and mindfulness is key.
Much of the work I do with clients involves development of Professional and Personal goals. Many times, this starts with calming the mind. Our minds are strong and the ability to tame these thoughts can yield to great returns.
Some easy steps to tame these thoughts can be:
- When working on one task, consciously focus on that one task
- Recognize & label the thought, a mantra “I will only focus on …” will plug that thought
- Focus on slow and deep breaths
- Play music that calms you and elevates you
- Establish a regular exercise pattern
Taming mind chatter will give you the focus you need to crush your goals and:
- Help improve your life quality and quality of your sleep
- Help you focus on the present and excel in your professional and personal relationships
- Give you clarity of mind
- Increase your sense of calm and well-being
